About FAQs
What is this section about?
This section provides a wealth of information about skinfoto as we tried our best to anticipate your questions to ensure that you have an outstanding skinfoto experience.
General FAQs
Who will be able to see my photos?
You and only You! You control who sees your photos. skinfoto is designed to provide a private, secure place for you to store your photos.
What is skinfoto?
The skinfoto website and iPhone app allows you to monitor your skin conditions on the go or at home with ease. We’re not playing doctor here, but we are offering you an opportunity to: upload photos, receive product recommendations, earn points for product discounts, visualize progress and measure results, learn about skin conditions, and so much more…for FREE!
What is a skindivisual anyway?
What is a skindivisual you ask? In skinfoto a skindivisual is someone who takes control of leading a skin healthy lifestyle. We make that easy to do in skinfoto by empowering you through innovative tools that are both fun and FREE! Well, mega minds at MIT made this possible. Upload your photos now to begin your journey towards becoming a skindivisual.
Is skinfoto free?
Yes. skinfoto is free! Speechless, I know. You’re thinking to yourself, my mother always told me nothing in life is free…so how could this be? Well, great news! We spoke to your mom (not really) and decided that you deserve it, because after all you are a skindivisual. Right?
Do I have to buy products from skinfoto to use the skin analysis tool?
Nope! It’s your lucky day or 365 of those x many years in the near future (or until we say so, which probably won’t happen…so enjoy!).
How accurate is skinfoto?
How accurate? Well pretty darn good. skinfoto is a pretty good indicator of the severity of your skin condition, as it uses proprietary imaging algorithms developed by some really smart people (I’m talking MIT smart!). However, there are numerous factors that determine the accuracy of skinfoto. The key to ensuring the most accurate results is to make sure you read all of the FAQs on taking a good photo. Just a reminder, skinfoto is a fun tool and should never take the place of advice from your physician or healthcare provider.
Is skinfoto a diagnostic tool?
No. Nein. Nai. Não. Niet. skinfoto is a pretty good indicator of the severity of your skin condition, but does NOT and should not be used to diagnose your skin condition. Not to sound like a parrot, but skinfoto is a fun tool and should never take the place of advice from your physician or healthcare provider.
Taking Good Photos FAQs
What concerns can I analyze?
You can analyze acne, wrinkles, redness, hyperpigmentation, melasma, stretchmarks, and scars.
On the first step of uploading a photo of your concern, a sample photo will come up which is a good example of what that concern looks like.
How should I take the photo?
Photos should be in .jpg format, and up to 5MB in size.
In general, higher resolution leads to a better analysis.
What about the lighting?
Good lighting is important! We recommend taking your photo indoors in a well lit space. Try to avoid lighting which creates shadows in the photo. Also, try to be consistent; take your photos in the same place with the same lighting each time.
What about cropping and zooming?
It's important that after cropping your condition is well represented in the photo. For photos of the face, please use the cropping step of the upload process to crop your photo from the hairline to the chin. For photos of other areas, please try to zoom in as much as possible. For a long scar, it's better to zoom in on one part of the scar than to try to fit the whole scar in the frame.
For those analyses which require annotating the condition, how should I do so?
Click and move your mouse over the image to "paint" areas of concern. Avoid "painting" hair into the region of concern. For scars, "paint" over the scar including a little background skin.
Anything else to keep in mind?
For facial photos, please try to keep both ears in the photo. Don't tilt your head or smile broadly. Keep your mouth closed. Try to keep your facial expression the same in all photographs for better comparison over time.
Skin Analysis Tool FAQs
How often should I upload a new photo of my skin?
Part of being a skindivisual is putting you in control of your skin care. With that, you can upload as often as you would like. There are no set guidelines for the frequency of uploading new photos. Just remember that some products take days to see results, whereas others may take months.
What does my score indicate?
- We have setup an index score ranging from 0 to 100, with 0 indicating least severe (green) and 100 indicating most severe (red).
- The index score was created by skinfoto to be used as an easy to use scale to help quantify your skin condition. It helps make it easy for you to track, whether you're scores are not improving, staying the same, or improving.
- The essence of skinfoto is that all scores assigned are unbiased and impartial.
- This index score was created by skinfoto and should not be used in place of direction by your physician or healthcare provider.
I think I look better, but my score on skinfoto indicates that my condition is worse?
You could easily be right! Accurate results require accurate photos. Please be sure to closely follow the instructions in the FAQ section titled taking good photos.
How will my progress be tracked?
Visit the progress section of your user dashboard, to learn more (you must create an account in order to track progress).
Can I treat and track multiple skin conditions via skinfoto at once?
Simply add new albums, to track the progress of multiple skin conditions.
What's the difference between the hyperpigmentation and the melasma analysis?
Both analyses measure discoloration, but they give different types of feedback. The hyperpigmentation module is sensitive to small brown spots such as freckles, and measures the overall prominence (based on number and intensity) of the spots. The melasma analysis is meant for larger dark patches that often occur on the cheeks and it reports the overall darkness of the patch relative to the background skin.
